The Christmas tree each year in the evening of Dec. 7, Immaculate Conception day, the lights along the slopes of Monte Ingino, is really something special. It is the largest tree in the world, maintaining a true symbol of Gubbio.
He spent the last stone houses of Gubbio in the basilica of St. Ubaldo, the patron saint of the city, close to where the shining star of Bethlehem that complements the tree.
Four hundred meters of light as the crow flies (1312 feet) to announce and Christmas in Gubbio get the authenticity of documents. The tree, visible from the mountains and Umbertide hill Perugia, is designed with bright neon lights tinged with different colors: green lights design of the form. This initiative began several years ago, when few people of Gubbio has decided to celebrate Christmas in another way: they had the idea to place the tree on the side of Mount overlooking the city on December 7 1980 in the evening, after numerous problems were shining lights for the first time. Since then, the ceremony is repeated through a special committee composed of volunteers giving their work for free for about three months. In 1990, the postal service celebrated the tenth anniversary of this initiative with a special conteining this sentence: “Tenth anniversary of the biggest Christmas tree in the world.” This cancellation has become one of the most appreciated by philatelist.
